John Sledge to sign his newest book The Pillared City-Greek Revival Mobile
MUSEUM OPENS PILLARS OF THE COMMUNITY WITH BOOKSIGNING
Mobile, AL -- The Museum of Mobile celebrates the opening of its new temporary exhibit with Mobile architectural historian John S. Sledge signing his new book, The Pillared City—Greek Revival Mobile on October 8th from 5:30-8:30 pm.
The Pillared City presents Mobile to the world through its architecture. Sledge highlights Mobile as it emerges from a colonial town into a prominent seaport, incorporating stories of landmarks, people, and events. The book also features beautiful photographs by Shelia Hagler and other historical images from the time.
Robert Gamble, Senior Architectural Historian, Alabama Historical Commission, wrote, “Sledge’s literary skill allows him to sustain interest by treating the buildings within the human context that brought them into being—and on occasion brought them down. A hefty slice of Mobile history is served up, with buildings as the primary vehicle through which the story is told.”
Officially opening October 11, 2009, Pillars of the Community-Mobile’s Greek Revival Movement exhibit is a companion piece to Sledge’s book. The exhibit showcases the men and women behind the Greek Revival movement in Mobile. Featuring photographs from The Pillared City and rare architectural artifacts, including four Greek statues from the Municipal Archives, Pillars of the Community will be open to preview during the booksigning.
The Museum of Mobile is located in historic downtown at 111 Royal Street and is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. To make reservations for the booksigning call 251-208-7569 or for more information about this or more upcoming events go to www.museumofmobile.org.
