AND THEY'RE OFF!
Horse racing in Mobile, Alabama did you say? Absolutely! The Museum of Mobile proudly announces an exciting exhibit that explores the rich and illustrious Sport of Kings. “AND THEY’RE OFF!” is a fun and immersive exhibit that will transport the visitor back in time to the 19th century when horses were the method of transportation and thoroughbred horse racing was the number one spectator sport.
Where were Mobile’s racetracks located, how do you measure a horse’s height, who were the movers and shakers involved in local equestrian culture, and what was the atmosphere like at the local races? The answers to these questions are presented in a unique presentation.
Ever wondered how racehorses are named? Come to this exhibit and learn how and have the opportunity to name one of our three horse replicas that will be on display. Think you know how races were run and officiated in the 19th century! You may be surprised at what you see.
Step back in time to 19th century Mobile and discover artifacts unique to Mobile’s horse racing. See elegant carriages and buggies, children’s horse related toys, lady’s and gentlemen’s
fashions, period photographs and paintings, riding habits and equipment, and toll road passes. Each unique object attests to the vibrant horse racing culture that once enveloped Mobile.
The starting pistol is about to be fired and you do not want to miss the call for “AND THEY’RE OFF!” beginning April 13th at The Museum of Mobile. Come discover the fascinating story of horse racing in Mobile and how it influenced the Port City for nearly 100 years.
The Museum of Mobile is located in historic downtown at 111 Royal Street and is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and $3.00 for students, and free for children under 6.
