We Remember
New Traveling Exhibit at the Museum of Mobile

“We Remember” is a collection of 75 photographic images on loan from the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. This exhibit officially opens at the Museum of Mobile on Veterans Day, November 11, 2007, and runs through Memorial Day, May 26, 2008. Our staff selected these inclusive dates for this exhibit in honor of our fellow Americans from the WWII generation who served overseas and on the homefront. Although many of the images in this exhibit document the American role in the war, there are also shots of wartime Great Britain and other nations at war. From the beaches of Tarawa in the Pacific to the frozen Ardennes at the Battle of the Bulge, U.S. Marines, soldiers, sailors, and airmen are shown in combat and during lulls in the fighting. American women who served as nurses and in the war industries are also featured in these photographs. Although the majority of the photographs range chronologically from 1941 through 1945, some shots were taken prior to U.S. entry into the war, and one interesting image from London in 1948 shows emergency precautions undertaken because of unexploded bombs. In brief, these photographs provide an unflinching view of WWII—The heroism and horrific carnage of combat and its aftermath, the tedium between battles, the destruction in Europe and the Pacific, the liberation of Nazi concentration camps, and the sacrifices that were made overseas and on the homefront.
The MOM staff is currently soliciting artifacts from Mobilians who served overseas and at home. These items will be exhibited outside the “We Remember” gallery. The MOM will welcome the donation of artifacts such as uniforms, photographs, letters, and other items of interest from the WWII era. These artifacts will help tell the stories of Mobilians who contributed to the war effort both at home and on the battlefields.
The Museum of Mobile, located at 111 Royal Street, is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and $3.00 for students, and free for children under 6.
