The Museum of Mobile collects objects and other materials that document and represent the history and culture of the metropolitan community of the city of Mobile and immediate area. Also of interest are materials relating to the development and history of the state, including the Native American, colonial, and territorial periods inhabiting the Alabama Gulf Coast region.
Not all donations need to document well-known people or momentous events in Mobiles history. Common, day-to-day items can also be important, especially if the donor can tell us who used them and when they were used. Seemingly insignificant personal items such as photographs, letters and clothing. A well-worn artifact may tell more about our history than does an item that was never out of its box. But, an item does not have to be old to be of importance. Items of recent vintage that may someday have an historic context, could be of great importance to the future.
Any item accepted for the permanent collections is stored in a state-of-the-art climate controlled facility, where it is preserved and made available for exhibitions, educational programming and research.
